Dr. Derek Emmanuel is currently the Medical Laboratory Director of SAPH Laboratory Services. He specializes in determining the underlying cause of disease states and possesses two postgraduate degrees in Pathology, majoring in both Molecular and Chemical Pathology.
Dr. Emmanuel is the recipient of two scholarships, a Postgraduate University of the West Indies (UWI) scholarship and the Jeffrey Taylor scholarship from the prestigious Institute of Human Nutrition (IHN) located in Southampton, England. Dr. Emmanuel spent the final years of his study at the Southampton General Hospital, Southampton, UK using Gas-Chromatography Flame-Ionization detection (GC-FID) techniques to examine long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) isolated from maternal and cord blood to determine inherent metabolic relationships that affect the developing foetus during pregnancy.
In July, 2007, Dr. Emmanuel received an award from the Paediatric-Maternal division of the American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC) where his work on “Lipid levels in pregnancy and birth outcome” superseded submissions from all over the world, for best Abstract, by the AACC review committee at the San Diego Convention Centre, USA.
Dr. Emmanuel’s work allowed for the discovery of a blood analyte which, at specific concentrations in the first trimester of pregnancy, predicts birth weight. He has also developed a genetic probe that uses non-radioactive biotinylated labels to detect human papillomavirus (HPV) in seemingly normal cervical cells.
In January 2014, Dr. Emmanuel was awarded the Prime Minister’s award for scientific ingenuity and excellence (special prize), hosted by NIHERST (Trinidad and Tobago) for the development of a Chronic noncommunicable disease (CNCD) Calculator.
In May, 2015, Dr. Emmanuel and his company’s inceptive approach to health was nationally recognized by being honoured as a champion of the 2015 ideas to innovation (i2i) competition.
In August, 2015, Dr. Emmanuel was (again) awarded the Prime Minister’s award for scientific ingenuity and excellence (finalist), hosted by NIHERST (Trinidad and Tobago) for the development of a Diagnostic (Health) Calculator.
In August 2016, Dr. Emmanuel was a winner in the Scotiabank Vision Achiever Award for his company’s innovative approach of preventive cancer strategies utilizing DNA testing.
In April, 2021, Dr. Emmanuel became a certified ISO 9001 Lead Auditor (Quality Management System)
